Presentation - St. Anna Chapel Gheorgheni
North to Gheorgheni, on 1,087 m above sea level on the Csobot-peak there are two chapelles standing, side by side, looking down on the basin, like two sisters, bearing the name of a saint, Anna. The older one, St. Anna's Chapel was presumably built sometime between the 13th-14th centuries, a typical four-lobed Rotonda that was rebuilt in later in the 18th century in baroque style, when to the Rotonda a nave was attached. The newer chapel was built in the 18th century in memory of the deceased during the great plague that occured in the 18th century.
Traditionally there are several events related to the chapel: two pilgrimages, one taking place on the Ressurection day's dawn and the other when celebrating St. Anna's memory in the Chatolic calendar. There is also a sports event organized round the chapel called "Cross Kápolna". It is a popular hike for the locals wanting a short escape to the wild, enjoying a great view.
Nonetheless there is an important reason why there are two chapels next to one to the other. They carry a message for the inhabitants of the town, they are the symbol of brotherhood between peoples, in this case, the Szekler and Armenian brotherhood. |
